Todd McFarlane has put out the challenge to submit fan art of his creation, Spawn, to be featured in the upcoming 250th issue in a pin-up gallery. Theres NO WAY I'm missing out on this! Granted, the chances of me being chosen in the Lucky 13 and even moving onto the final 9 are slim, but who cares? I started drawing Spawn from an early age when I was really developing as a young artist in elementary. If I do get chosen, this will have gone full circle!
I slapped everything on this piece! from the traditional line work, using ink pens and ink wash to layer Spawn himself, then going "batty" with water colours, acrylic and copic markers to flesh out the living cape. I cleaned up the background to look pure white and added some effects around the eyes and some lines on his gauntlet, other than that its all pure traditional work.
The idea of his crouching over a web of chains in, what looks like a purgatory setting, is a throwback to the covers for the TPBs, which were reworked pictures of the classic covers.
I was originally going to lean more towards a movie variation of the suit to get a leaner, spikey, red image. I sketched it out and it didnt appeal to me. I wanted to add that giant boot that he wears but that didnt look right on this image.
Wish me the best of luck! I hope this piece gets far but if not it gets enjoyed by many!
